Will Page 10K Newick – 23rd August.

After 5K it’s fairly level before a long steep incline, dropping down once again to a stream then back to the village finishing in the playing field outside the Sports Pavilion.

Hellingly 10K – 13th September

The start is in Station Road, which is 8oom walk from the village hall. The course is described as undulating along country roads, with an off road finish of 45m in the field next to the car park.

Hove Prom 10K – 20th September

The start and finish is on the promenade at Hove Lagoon for a flat and fast two lap course,  along the seafront.

Barns Green Half Marathon – 27th September

This figure of eight half marathon near Horsham, is run on closed roads through the beautiful Sussex countryside, passing through the historic Christ’s Hospital School.

Lewes Downland 10 Mile – 4th October

The course is a mixture of chalk and downland grass tracks, across scenic National Trust land and the South Downs Way. Water stations at 2.5 and 7.5 miles and at the finish. The start and finish are in a meadow near the old Lewes Racecourse.

Crowborough 10K – 29th November

An undulating 2 lap course of Green Lane, Crowborough Hill and Palesgate Lane. If there is deep water at Palesgate Lane ford, the race is diverted over the bridge parallel to the ford. A tough 10K but very popular.

Saturday Morning 8th August

There’s only one thing better [or worse] than running down Spithandle Lane and that’s running up it! However I suggest we don’t go very far along it tomorrow and then circle round towards Steyning and back up the Downs Link. It’s about 10 miles and pretty flat. I have been asked when we are going to do some longer runs, so maybe we should up the mileage a bit in a fortnight’s time [I am away next Saturday]. Your views please?

PS: Next Saturday (15th) there will be a kayaking excursion on the Adur with a plan to meet up with the running group – contact Mark for more information!

Saturday Morning 1st August

Pinch-Punch, first day of the month! A route of about 10 miles has been requested on Saturday, so I hope this slightly shorter version of the Lock Farm run fits the bill. Any newbies may be assured that we are now fully committed to running back, aren’t we?!

“Another great run, Thanks Hugh. Pics below” Dave

Seven Stiles Results

Well, we didn’t quite expect the weather to be as bad as it was today – its mid summer for heavens sake! However well done and congratulations to everyone who braved the conditions this morning – to be fair the Juniors were amazing, they had the worst weather but turned out in force and were keen to get going! And of course to all our marshals who were out in those conditions for a lot of the day, either directing traffic or directing runners! The provisional results are below, and a report with some photographs will follow when I’ve dried out a bit more!

Should there be any queries then please contact me at: sevenstiles@henfieldjoggers.co.uk

Roundhill Romp Race Report

For the last two years of so, I have got as far as going to the pub after the run, but not actually taken part myself. I have heard tales of big hills a plenty, but always got the impression that those that ran this Fun Run, seemed to kind of enjoy it.
So on the hottest day of the year so far, I joined the big crowd of Hj’s, sporting our now well known and instantly recognizable green vests, and headed off down Steyning High Street for our 6 mile circuit. As always, some of us ran the race and some of us took it at a nice easy jog. The route led down a lovely shady Mouse Lane where, after two miles we were rewarded with a water station before our hike up to Chanctonbury. As everyone had said before, there was no shame in walking up that hill – and as it pretty much a one-mile hill, walk it I did, where we were welcomed with more water at the top.
The run then headed east back towards Steyning along the top of the downs. The views were amazing and there was a perfect breeze blowing. It was then a fairly straight forward descent back down to the Cricket Field to the usual roars and cheers from our fantastically supportive club.
We had ‘newbies’ (massive well done to Kirsty and Fiona), ‘oldies’ (no names mentioned), ‘super fast’ and ‘comfortably paced’ joggers representing the club and it seemed that everyone really, really enjoyed this one. A great example that the Fun Runs are there for everyone to get involved in, whatever standard you are So if you haven’t done one yet, get your name down on Dani’s list for the next one.

SDW Relay 2015 Race Report

Race report by a South Downs Way Relay Virgin!
I have done a few big races in my short running life, but never anything like the South Downs Way Relay, I was asked if I would like to be part of the relay team and being new to the club was encouraged to take part by some of the more long standing members, so I couldn’t really refuse. I was given my legs (6,12 and 18) and with some help and advice from some of the members I duly went out and practiced them. Although the signage was very good it helps to know where you are going on the day.
The day started early, a 04:15 pick up from Amanda’s house then off to Henfield to collect the rest and swap into the relevant team vans.
The A team (Andy, Danielle, Fabian, Colin, Tom and myself) were in the slightly smaller van which was cosy but comfortable, with our driver Richard, and Tammy our Timekeeper, off we set to Beachy Head to Register.
The race started at 6am sharp with Fabian taking the first leg, as soon as he was out of sight we were back in the van heading towards the half way point of his leg to see him run past, after which we headed out to the change over point.
Change overs came and went and when we could see the runners on route we would stop to cheer them on.
Finally my first leg was up, Richard had got us to Ditchling Beacon with a good ten minutes to spare before Colin was due in to hand over, I got myself ready and had a little jog around the car park to warm up. I have never done a team event before and it’s at this point I realised it not all about me, today it’s all about the team, and if I fail I am not just letting myself down but my team mates as well. After giving myself a good talking to in the car park, I went over to the marshall a waited for Colin to come into sight, as soon as we could see him Danielle was shouting his name and encouraging him in, by the time he got to the road everybody in the car park knew who he was. The change over was a two baton change as there was a main road, Colin came in and I was released by the Marshall on my side of the road. The run to Saddlescombe was undulating for the first part then down towards the A23, after which there is a steep incline and then it’s downhill to the finish, I kept looking at my watch throughout the run because I was given a 42 minute estimated time for that leg, and I didn’t want to go to slow or to fast, I came in at 42:02 according to my Garmin. I handed over to Fabian, then it was back to the van and we were off to the next change over point.
I think the atmosphere changed in the van after everyone had done their first leg, it became more relaxed and easy going with a little bit of banter. The more experienced in the van looked after us virgins and made sure we knew where we were going. Richard was outstanding very calm and collective, knew exactly were he was going and always got us to the change overs in plenty of time to get ourselves sorted out.
Leg 2 for me was slightly longer than my first with a steep incline at the beginning and then undulating across the top with another fast downhill finish. Pretty uneventful, slightly slower then my estimate time 44:34, but we were, at this point ahead of our estimated finishing time.
Leg 3 the glory leg, the last leg. Tom was running leg 17 the longest leg of the relay and I asked him not to hang about, we were already ahead but I just wanted a bit of time just incase. Tom delivered, when I looked at my watch he came in at around 19:02, I had 58 minutes to run 5.5 miles, the first part of the run is a gradual climb up to the A272 where I was greeted with the A team cheering me on. Then it’s pretty much down hill to the finish. We managed to complete the race in 13:52.
After a very cold and quick shower we all headed to the pub for some well earned food and drink, before the drive back.
I would just like to say thanks to Mark for giving me the opportunity to run the relay, Richard for his friendly advice throughout the day, and Tammy for remembering all the essentials that everyone else forgot. Not forgetting my Team Mates for making it a memorable and enjoyable day.

Kinesiology Taping Session by Angie Brotheridge

This Friday (29th May) Angie Brotherton, a local therapist who has worked with is before (you can see her website here) is holding another Kinesiology taping session in the treatment room at Henfield Leisure Centre. The session is between 6pm and 8pm and will cost between £3 – £5 depending on how much tape gets used!

Those of us that tried it earlier this year were impressed by the difference it made when doing strenuous events, and with the Petworth series of runs on Saturday the timing seems very good!

Saturday Morning 23rd May

There is still a possibility of seeing some bluebells on this Saturday morning route of just under 10 miles, although there are no guarantees. It’s pretty flat and, as usual, there are plenty of shortcut options.

Sussex Grand Prix Races in June

This is a summary of the Grand Prix races during June that I’d urge you to consider!

The first SGP race in June is the Worthing 10K on the 7th, a fast, flat coastal run, starting and finishing on Worthing promenade.

This is followed by the Heathfield 10K on 21st June, the route takes in scenic rural country lanes around the villages of Cross in Hand and Waldron in East Sussex. They say the course is undulating for the first half, and uphill for the second.

Next comes Bewl 15 on 5th July, a lovely pretty, gently undulating run around Bewl Water. The route is clockwise, and quite a lot of it is flat. It is largely wooded, with some field sections. There is a 3 mile section on country roads, this is to avoid the Nature Reserve and is the hilly part. Then back to the reservoir, for a further 2 miles, before going back up the trail to Wadhurst.

After that is the Phoenix 10K on 15th July, a very flat and fast run , producing fast times. From Hove Lawn’s café heading west to Carats café at 5K, then back to  the finish.

Finally, for this time, the last SGP race in July is the Bexhill 5K on the 29th, a Wednesday night,

which is a simple 2 X out and back along the seafront, 1.25K each way. Very flat, and well supported race.
