It’s taken a while…

Apologies for how long it has taken me to update the blog. It was originally due to the fact I was without internet for several months due to ‘speak/speak’ taking a ridiculous amount of time to transfer us to our new address and then secondly I am afraid well…. life got in the way.

So what’s happened this year? Well, in March I took part in the Henfield 9 Miler. It was an interesting race, a nice local course and I came, well basically last. Now, I know that someone has to come last, and why shouldn’t it be me? But unfortunately I really let it dent my confidence. I started to avoid all long runs on a Saturday and felt myself getting more and more frustrated at being at the back and feeling like every mile was a struggle.

But that’s what is so wonderful about being part of a club or team such as the Henfield Joggers… I eventually spoke to the lovely Mark about my running woes and after a suitable ‘get over yourself/think positive’ pep talk I realised that 50% of my problem was now mental. I thought I couldn’t get faster and couldn’t do better and it had become a self-fulfilling prophecy. So I decided to give myself a challenge…..The South Downs Relay 2015. This year, I wasn’t picked for the team quite rightly as I was and still am far too slow. But next year I am determined to be there. Fabian and I marshalled for them in June and it was such a great team atmosphere I really felt I wanted to be part of this relay team.

So since making that decision I have started adding in a lone run on Mondays. Before I joined the HJ’s I would always run on my own so I thought it may be worth adding in a run where I have no distractions and must push myself. These runs aren’t nearly so much fun as the runs I do with my fellow Joggers but I have chosen my own 3 mile route and have to date shaven 5 minutes off of my time. I have also tried, whilst out on HJ runs not to have such a defeatist attitude and really try to keep up with the front runners such as Hugh, Brian, Mark and Amanda. Slowly but surely I feel like my running is improving and thus so is my confidence. As I have mentioned before- I wasn’t built for running and it certainly doesn’t come naturally to me but I guess like anything you have to work hard at it. I am just so lucky to have found such a lovely group of runners to enjoy it all with.

So after only a year as a HJ member I am giving myself some challenges for 2015.

 1. To take part in the South Down Relay

 2. To run a Marathon… all 26 bloomin’ miles

 3. To beat or at least match Fabian in a fun run (Yes, I am aware of how unrealistic this one is!)

 4. To take part in the 3 Peaks Challenge with fellow Henfield Joggers (Not strictly running related but still for a great cause!)

So if you can bare reading my ramblings I will try to keep you updated on how the training goes for all of these challenges.

How bad can it be?!?!?!  😉

I have signed up for a Half Marathon in a months time. Starting the 2015 training early.

Fittleworth Flyers Five – Race Report –

9 Joggers turned out on this cloudy, humid Sunday morning.  Despite a slightly rocky start as the Fittleworth Flyers had no record of our entries, we managed to get everyone a number just in time. A quick dash to the starting point and we were off! Some of us had heard dirty rumours that this was as challenging as the Roundhill romp, and luckily I think we all decided it wasn’t that bad… I mean challenging. It does however have enough hills to make this run rather demanding, and by no means ‘easy’.

The course has some lovely wooded parts and also goes through some beautiful country lanes. At one point there was even a lovely cheering squad who didn’t seem teamist and gave encouragement to all runners.

It was great to see the return runners going past and we were able to give each other encouragement. Alan led our team to victory, followed by Fabian and Kieran. We all gave each other a quick well done as we passed each other and luckily I wasn’t the only one to mistake Louise for Nikki as these sisters could pass as twins!

At the end of the race, in true Henfield Jogger Style we all rewarded ourselves with a cake from the amazing selection that the Flyers had to offer. We all agreed that the true reason we get involved in these fun runs has nothing to do with personal fitness, getting points for the club or being competitive. It is of course just to have a reason… no an excuse… to eat lots of lovely cake.

ALAN BARWICK: 41.27

FABIAN KAELIN: 43:22

KIERAN LEVER: 47.34

DANIELLE KAELIN: 49.06

LOUISE LEVER: 49.09

GILL HAMILTON-ORR: 49.35

NIKKI HARGREAVES: 50.23

LIZ PAMMENT: 53.12

ALISON TURNER: 53.15

Saturday Morning 30th August (Updated)

As a change to the previously published run, and due to Shoreham Air Display weekend, we could do something completely different on Saturday – never let it be said we are stuck in a rut – park in the A283 layby and then follow this route. It’s just under 13 miles and has over 1,500 feet of climbing, but should maximise our chances of seeing some planes.

Hornet Stinger report

Well, last holiday weekend of this summer, many people away, Henfield seemed deserted, even Swains was totally empty this afternoon……and a tough little mother of a ‘fun run’………perhaps not a surprise that only 5 of us fancied this. I say fancy, Danielle and I had similar views on that point. Not even a ‘seemed like a good idea at the time’ thought, as it didn’t! But despite the ‘gulp, that’s a lot of climbing’ feeling, we were there, and on a glorious sunny Sunday, along with about 300 other fools, all vying for that PB which was 100% guaranteed on this inaugural run. From Waterhall we wound our way up to intercept Newtimber Hill near the top, over the crown to tumble (literally) down towards Saddlescombe, but jumping left and climbing again to head back towards Waterhall, but only after a series of false “this is the last hill, mostly, honest” from the marshals, who were plentiful and encouraging. Even at the last, with the finish in sight, there was a series of steps to climb! The conditions underfoot were perfect, but I’d still say that this is the toughest of the WSFRL fun run series now, and at just under 6 miles one of the longest. BUT, it was great fun, a wonderful course, well organised and great to reflect back on. I’d encourage some of you “I don’t do fun runs but I like Roundhill Romp” people to tackle this next year, you’ll love it!!!! And even a free raffle afterwards for all entrants, now there’s a novelty! Results below and great to see that Andy was 3rd overall, leading to a dressing down from Danielle for simply ‘not trying hard enough’…….

Saturday Morning 23rd August

Those of us running autumn marathons need to crank up the mileage a bit, so I suggest we do the Convent Run this Saturday – just over 13 miles, but pretty flat throughout. There are plenty of short cuts for anyone who would prefer a shorter runimage

Henfield Half Marathon

An unusual occurrence at the Henfield Half today was that a film was being shot as part of the race. Agreed by the organiser, (Simon at the Henfield Leisure Centre) a film crew from Cambridge University Press, complete with flying drone camera (I kid you not! They even had a ‘bear in the air!’), did some filming as part of a plot for an English language course film. It involved a runner (Race number 101 by the way) who was filmed at the start and finish! Only two Henfield Joggers in todays race due to a clash with Tilgate (see separate report) but lots of support all over the place:

Duncan Blackburn – 1:55:39
Denis Muirden       – 2:20:25

Danielle got some video footage of the start and photo’s of the ‘drone’ – see below:

Tilgate Forest Fun Run

Some of us headed up to Tilgate Forest for the Saints & Sinners 5m Fun run this morning.  Nikki, Louise, Lorna, Alison T and me.  Nikki’s sister Louise and brother-in-law joined us too. Alan Barwick was also there, sporting his Team HJ’s running vest! (Sadly we didn’t get a pic)!  It’s great that we can now easily spot members of our team and get encouraging shout outs from the Marshals!  Go Henfield!!

It was a lovely run, completely off road, through the forest trails and the conditions were just perfect.  One or two little hills, but nothing compared to the Highdown Hike or Roundhill Romp that some had recently endured.  Highly recommended for anyone tempted next year!

A Day on the Downs

Thankfully we were a day ahead of the storm and had pretty perfect exercise conditions!

10 of us met as planned in Steyning car park and for a moment it looked like a pre Crufts convention rather than an alternative HJs event! On time we set off, leaving Steyning by the quiet lanes before making the steep ascent up the Downs. But boy do the views make it worthwhile! The fact that most were still able to talk must be testament that we are fitter than perhaps we feel?!

We joined the South Downs Way and after approx 4.5 miles of walking, took a wooded path leading down to Washington, where we met up with another 7 of us at The Frankland Arms in Washington for a quick drink. On moving on the 5 cyclists then braved the steep South Downs Way climb from the Washington car park, while the walkers continued on the lower path, via one unplanned field, where Liz’s gallant husband helped people and animals over a wire fence! After 3.5 miles of beautiful scenery at the foot of the Downs, going past Wiston House, we entered Steyning via Mouse Lane. Thankfully for Liz and I, there was a unanimous agreement that the walk / route had been thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Once at The Star Inn, Steyning we seemed to continue with HJs current form with pubs! Ok, we were later arriving than Liz and I had calculated (having walked it the previous week), but we were horrified to discover that the cyclists had been told on arrival that they were unaware of us coming! This was despite Liz and I discussing our event with the landlady in person and confirming by email!! There was 1 lad working the bar, (far from ideal when we were all thirsty!) and the wait for food was an hour initially. Note – we won’t be frequenting there again! Anyway, the sun was shining and 19 of us enjoyed relaxing for a couple of hours in the beer garden!

Thanks by many have been received and Liz and I feel that despite the pub not meeting expectation, the day was a resounding success! Hopefully the storyboard of photos reflects this! For all the photos’s, courtesy of Gill and Sue, go to the Gallery here!

Highdown Hike, Results & Partridge

On a warm, clear Sussex evening we had a Jiggle of Joggers (I reckon thats an appropriate word for a group of Joggers? Isn’t it???) at Highdown, Goring – in fact checking back in the records on the ‘West Sussex Fun Run League’ website this is the largest group we’ve had for this race since 2008 – the earliest record available online! And all wearing ‘skool uniform’ (well, almost all!) too. Results will be published as soon as they’re available but especially lovely to see Alison and Lorna on their second week as members and out enjoying the experience of this great run. Slight hiccup (nearly hiccup!) at the start as we were all so busy taking the photo at the top of the hill that we ‘nearly’ underestimated how far down the hill the Start actually was! A stroll downhill ended in a run to beat the Starter, already making his safety briefing – and the road was packed with 400 runners, and deep ditches either side! We squeezed in where we could – and then off we went almost immediately. That first uphill is very slow because the path is so narrow that unless you’re at the front, you are forced to walk (or in my case even stand waiting!) for the route to clear. The views on top were, as always, magnificent – out towards Portsmouth and IoW clear as anything – if you could see from the sweat dripping down – it was warm work! Mis-heard quote of the evening (or the Year!) award goes to Natasha – she heard me follow a nice comment to the marshals at one corner, who were really great, with what I ACTUALLY said “Gotta rate the marshals” becoming, in her ears “Gotta RAPE the marshals”. My how we laughed and laughed as we whiled away the downhill trot, acutely aware that we had to go back up again TWICE yet!

Wonderful run, great event, well marshalled and a superb evening all round – although Mandy told me afterwards that I was WRONG and that this was WORSE than Roundhill Romp!!!! Its a matter of opinion, I did say there wasn’t much in it! Sorry Mandy!!

And congratulations to everyone who ran, and to Andy who finished 10th overall, from a  record field of 450, and a record number of 421 finishers! And of course to new members Lorna and Alison running their first ‘Fun Run’, and to Tammy who also completed her own ‘first fun run’! The ‘Hike’ isn’t the easiest – congratulations and a virtual medal!

photo

Meanwhile, with peak holiday season in full flow we were still able to field a second group running from The Partridge, who seemed to have a nice time without us but got recruited by the Morris Men later – if I hear any faint jingles the next time we’re all out, I’m running, VERY fast indeed, the opposite way!

Thanks to Dave, who found this great video on You Tube of the start of the race – see how many Joggers you can spot? Had we delayed for ‘one more photo’ this is what would have faced us as we trotted down the road to the Start!!!!!
