Brighton ‘Brook’s 10k’ results and Race report

The weather was kind to us on Brighton seafront this morning. There was a very large crowd of reportedly over 3000 runners. Simon, Lorna, John and I started the race together, along with Simon’s friends ‘Pugsy’ and Tim. Both of which we are hoping to recruit as HJers!

Fabian also came to support us, unfortunately unable to run due to a injury. He is however a rather good sports photographer it turns out, (shame he missed his wife in most of the pictures) his photos you can see below.

It was wonderful to see the Infamous Jogger Mick Dee and his lovely wife Cynthia. Both looked wonderful in their new HJ team tops. I managed a quick wave at Lotte, who, in real Lotte style put us all to shame with her enviable speed. Particularly as Lorna and I are using the excuse of the lovely hilly trail run we had ran with the Saturday group the day before. Lotte ran that too but that certainly wasn’t slowing her down. Well done Lotte!

Saturday 15th November updated

OK – this is a revised, updated route for tomorrow as the original 18 miler was the subject of much Facebook discussion! It involves driving down to Steyning Bowl and is a lovely undulating run of about 9 or 11 miles, depending whether Cissbury is included. Meet at HLC as usual at 8am and transport will be provided!!!

Poppy Run Saturday 8th November

2014-11-08 11.32.02

So having signed up to do the Poppy Half Marathon and Quarter Marathon along Bexhill seafront on Saturday morning, it was a bit disconcerting to get an email on Friday to warn of ‘extreme winds’ forecast for the event!  well, the forecast was right and at times the wind knocked us sideways, showered us with sea spray and had deposited large amounts of shingle and sea foam on the promeade to run through.  However, it did stay dry and the sun did peak through at times which made both the sea and the run exhilarating.  Two minutes silence was followed by the quarter marathon runners heading out hotly followed by the half marahon runners around two slightly different routes. This course is virtually flat and is all run along the promenade and closed roads so potentially one to get PB’s in calmer conditions!  We were all very pleased with our times of 1.01, 1.59 and 2.08 and of the beautiful medals that we all received – definately one to do again!

Here it is…the photograchic evidence from the very serious Saturday morning runs!

Saturday Morning 1st November – Pinch, Punch First of the Month

I suggest Lock Farm on Saturday – it’s just under 11 miles and there are variations, such as heading east at Moat Farm onto Honeybridge Lane to shorten the stretch along Spithandle Lane. I won’t be pushing the pace after Beachy last w/e, so it might be an opportunity for people who haven’t done a Saturday morning run to give it a go.

Beachy Head Marathon Review

After a miserably wet day on Friday, last Saturday dawned dry and reasonably bright, so the weather was no excuse for not setting out for Eastbourne, anticipating a reasonably good time, despite my lack of training. However the contrast with Clarendon a few weeks earlier could not have been greater! Firstly it was just Mark and myself, rather than a whole minibus full of Joggers, and secondly Beachy is a very different course.

I had not run a marathon before Clarendon since Brighton back in April and had missed more runs in the summer than for several years. Despite this and through starting slowly, I had felt pretty good over the last 6 miles at Clarendon, partly, but not entirely, due to my running companion.

I therefore started Beachy more slowly than I had ever done so, walking up not just hills, but relatively slight inclines. I tried to make up for this by running the flat and downhill sections fairly quickly, but I was nevertheless slightly surprised to be joined by Mark, who had said he would be running particularly slowly as he had laryngitis, after about 10 miles. It was muddy underfoot in places, but the weather was fine and the views as superb as ever.

However I stuck to my plan and it must have taken me longer to get to Litlington after 18 miles than it ever had, although I comforted myself with the thought that I would repeat my Clarendon experience. I could not have been more wrong! Those last 8 miles at Beachy are tougher than any I know in marathon, which I should have remembered, having done them on 23 previous occasions, so it’s as well get to Litlington as quickly as possible.

A combination of gels and Neurofen kept me going, together with the inimitable banter with Mark and I was able to muster quite a fast downhill mile, although I was pipped at the finish not only by him, but also an American young lady we met. I realised afterwards I should have carried a bottle of water to be refilled at the checkpoints like I did at Clarendon, as it was quite a humid day and it’s impossible drink enough out of a half filled cup.

The next time I run Beachy it will be my 25th and I am determined to prepare better. As one of my friends said, if you don’t, it will bite you, as it’s not a marathon to be taken lightly.

Great South Run Review by Lorna Winter

Overall the weather held up – yes it was windy as usual making those last 2 miles a real challenge!

The atmosphere was fabulous, the iconic ships looked great and the post race LornaNutella, Banana and Marshmallow Crepe was definitely worth running for!!

Always a bit of struggle to keep pace as there are so many people so it’s a bit like dodgems at times and with all the zig zagging I ended up running 10.14 miles instead of just 10. Most frustrating this time was the last 800m where twice I just couldn’t zoom (ok zoom might be a bit over the top)…past people as it narrowed quite a bit at points.

Pros and Cons to these big races really. Pros are the atmosphere, and the crowd support and pre and post race stalls yet cons are the slow shuffles at the start and the congestion during the run (unless you’re up with the elites!).
John and Lorna 1No doubt we will both be back again next year though.
Both of us did better than last time we did it – so course PB’s. Results that I can find are below but well done to Andy, 139th overall (out of 16,029 finishers!)

Alf Shrubb Memorial 5 review

Great local run off road in Slinfold in memory of the great Alf Shrubb – an amazing world class record breaking British athlete of the early 1900’s and onwards who was born in Slinfold ( see Wikipedia entry here).

shrubb 1I would like to say that we emulated him but whilst Liz P, Mike D and I started, we lost Mike at the end, hence the picture of just the two of us. Hope that it wasn’t something that we said Mike!

A very relaxed and scenic 2 looper of a race from the Cricket pavilion over theshrubb 2 fields and yes it was undulating (Paul), but with the new cake rating that we are now giving runs – this one must have merited an 8! The cake was so delicious that we have put a special picture in of it.

Well organised with clear directions and nice friendly marshals with a medal and a goody bag at the end. One to look out for next year.
