Exercise can be as good a medicine as pills for people with conditions such as heart disease, a study has found. The work in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) looked at hundreds of trials involving nearly 340,000 patients to assess the merits of exercise and drugs in preventing death. Physical activity rivalled some heart drugs and outperformed stroke medicine. The findings suggest exercise should be added to prescriptions, say the researchers. Experts stressed that patients should not ditch their drugs for exercise – rather, they should use both in tandem.
Too few adults currently get enough exercise. Only a third of people in England do the recommended 2.5 hours or more of moderate-intensity activity, such as cycling or fast walking, every week. In contrast, prescription drug rates continue to rise. There were an average of 17.7 prescriptions for every person in England in 2010, compared with 11.2 in 2000. For the study, scientists based at the London School of Economics, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute at Harvard Medical School and Stanford University School of Medicine trawled medical literature to find any research that compared exercise with pills as a therapy. They identified 305 trials to include in their analysis. These trials looked at managing conditions such as existing heart disease, stroke rehabilitation, heart failure and pre-diabetes. When they studied the data as a whole, they found exercise and drugs were comparable in terms of death rates. But there were two exceptions. Drugs called diuretics were the clear winner for heart failure patients, while exercise was best for stroke patients in terms of life expectancy.

Amy Thompson, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said that although an active lifestyle brings many health benefits, there is not enough evidence to draw any firm conclusions about the merit of exercise above and beyond drugs. “Medicines are an extremely important part of the treatment of many heart conditions and people on prescribed drugs should keep taking their vital meds. If you have a heart condition or have been told you’re at high risk of heart disease, talk to your doctor about the role that exercise can play in your treatment.” Dr Peter Coleman of the Stroke Association said exercise alongside drugs had a vital role that merited more research. “We would like to see more research into the long-term benefits of exercise for stroke patients. “By taking important steps, such as regular exercise, eating a balanced diet and stopping smoking, people can significantly reduce their risk of stroke.” “Moderate physical activity, for example, can reduce the risk of stroke by up to 27%.”
Well done to everyone who entered, and especially to Andy who finished a tremendous 7th place overall!!

Yes I know – WHERE? I am 100% certain that I am the only Henfield Jogger to complete this race – but its my hometown in the North East, just outside of Middlesbrough, on the coast with some lovely sandy beaches. Run for 31 years

its a good standard race attracting club runners from as far as Gateshead and even Sunderland, and as befits a previous home of Dame Danni Gray-Thomson even has a wheelchair race. The route delves into the industrial past of the area, running down the main road that separates the petrochemical industry on one side from the Steel industry on the other……but its a bit boring and you just turn around a roundabout and go back on yourself, through the start again [a la Barns Green] and then along the seafront along to Marske, the next town, where again its a U-turn and back on yourself [yawn!]. Fabulous weather made it a great day. I was running with my niece Debbie and her partner Alex, neither of whom is an experienced runner so my role was simply to support and encourage [and Alex carried not one but two injuries that forced him to drop out midway – amusingly as he walked back to the start area his chip was triggered and he received an official finishing time ahead of us! I must remember that one]. We were running in support of Parkinsons though so the pain Debbie felt was overshadowed by the £1k we raised to a very good cause. For me a PW (Personal Worst) of 2:42 but Debbie was truly happy to finish and not walk, and that made it all worthwhile. Plus I had a whale of a time in the sunshine and all the marshalls were absolutely brilliant and shared a lot of craic. I think I may do this again!
Report by Dave English:
Duncan & I had a successful Great North Run, with the results below.
Thankfully the rain held off until about my fifth mile, when it rained heavily for a couple. There is always a fantastic atmosphere there though, with loads of enthusiastic spectators. I’d recommend the race to anyone who hasn’t done it. I’m lacking in speed this year, so was very happy to get inside 1:50.
Results:
DUNCAN BLACKBURN 01:48:14
NATASHA HEASMAN 02:02:40
GARY WILKINSON 01:37:25

Gill sent us this report from last night, more comments would be lovely!
Well our late Summer Social felt temperature wise more like it should have been Bonfire Night! Undeterred and with the usual HJs stamina, approx 40 of us braved the 11C from 6:30pm to Midnight!
Tequila Punch got the eve off to a good start and the Chilli, rice, Veggie Fajita and wraps seemed very
well received.
Big thanks to Sue and Brian Spiers for opening up their home and lovely garden for us and their had work in preparing that. Thanks too to Mark for his beer tent (as well as organising Seven Stiles) and Harriet, Philip and Sarah for their help during the eve.
For the 2013 Social Secs, this was our first HJs summer social so we had nothing to compare it with, but from the many lovely comments received we gather attendance was very good and that all seemed to enjoy. Phew!!
On a cool, overcast but fortunately dry September day a combined field of over 320 runners successfully completed the Junior and Senior races.

Congratulations to Rupert Guiel of ARunners, and Neave Scott of Haywards Heath Harriers, who were first male and first female across the line for the Junior race, completing the 1 mile course in 6:15 and 6:22 respectively!

The Senior race was won by Max Pickard of Phoenix AC in 22:27, with Angela Carpenter of Chichester Runners the first female in 27:30
The full provisional results have now been processed and have been posted on the West Sussex Fun Run League website. A selection of photographs from the day can be found in the Seven Stiles Gallery, and will be added to as more images become available.
Many thanks to Simon and all the Leisure Centre staff who helped out on the day, and of course to Mark (Race Organiser) and Gayle (Race Secretary), Chris (Official Timer) and all the Henfield Joggers who helped out, and not forgetting Terry Bourne who came back to provide invaluable help on the day, with his years of experience in organising this race.

Finally, a huge thank you to Sara Knight, who has coordinated the Results for many years, stuck away in the Leisure Centre office far away from everyone – this was her final time of undertaking this role and we all owe her a huge debt – what will we do next year Sara?!….
As the webmaster (me) is now away and out of contact until 16th September, please ensure that any messages for the Seven Stiles event are addressed to Gayle at: sevenstiles@henfieldjoggers.co.uk
See you in two weeks
Paul
