Ten Green Bottles Update

Just to let you know that due to our smaller than anticipated numbers for Saturday, we will now be doing the small group tasting at £15 per head rather than the wine challenge – see here for the difference http://www.tengreenbottles.com/wine-tasting-brighton

On the plus side I’m sure it won’t be hard to spend the saved £10 in the Brighton Food Festival that is going on!

8 spaces left, so please confirm any additions to me as soon as poss.

Cheers!

Cranleigh 15/21 Report

Cranleigh is usually a classic pre-marathon training run, mainly along rural lanes in very pleasant Surrey countryside. The course is undulating, but there are no long hills – the worst one being just before the finish.
Yesterday’s event was however something else! I have never raced in such cold conditions, apart possibly from the Steyning Stinger last year when it was also wet. The temperature hovered around freezing, but the wind chill made it feel a lot colder and my fingers were so numb – despite wearing gloves – that it was an achievement just to open a gel.
However Ilidia, Jackie, Natasha, Marcus, Terry and myself all got round in very respectable times. Gary did an amazing 2.37 – that guy has a sub-3 marathon in him. Well done to everyone, including the marshalls who must have been even colder than we were.

Saturday Morning Run 16th March

This is the route for Saturday 16th’s run. It’s slightly different to the original proposal, adapted due to the bad weather! Still 17 miles with 1,000 feet of climbing. The weather forecast isn’t great, so we can always short cut if it gets too wet. I will be taking it even slower than usual due to my Achilles Tendonitis!

March Handicap ‘Social’ Update

Post Handicap Race Social at the Bell was a real success. Great turnout, delish food, really good selection of beers/wines and a real social atmosphere in warm and comfy surroundings. Thanks to The Bell for their warm welcome and thanks to everyone who supported this night and, following the positive feedback so far, we hope to be doing the same again next month. Keep a look out for updates here on the HJ website.

Stinger Update

5 intrepid Joggers set off at a few minutes past 8am to run, jog and walk the Stinger. It was dry underfoot – so much so that I wore road shoes – but there was a bitter east wind, making it difficult to decide what and how much to wear.
Mark, Terry and myself had done the event many times – it was my 10th – but Marcus only once before and it was Natasha’s first time, as it was Amanda’s who had started over half an hour earlier with Ralph, although apparently Gary had started even ealier.
The footpath beyond Mouse Lane was unusually dry and the only time we got our feet wet was crossing the field into Washington. The first ‘Sting’ up onto the SDW was as hard as ever, but I was going well and felt quite good on the climb up to Chanctonbury – although it was very cold – over Cissbury, round the golf course and back up to Cissbury. We then had to run into the wind to cross the Bostal road and circle Steepdown. Back across the road and up the final ‘Sting’ onto the SDW where the wind was, at last, behind us.
However, instead of flying down the Wiston Bostal, we had a more circuitous descent because Wiston House was hosting a conference. This was ok, but a more unpleasant surprise was the hill after 25 miles instead of the usual gentle – and fairly fast – descent down the road to the finish. However it is a great well-organised value-for-money event and congratulations are due to Amanda for completing her first marathon in a very respectable time – they don’t come much tougher!

Saturday Cycle

Nine of us met at the Leisure Centre at 10.30 and we collected another two ” en route”.

We took a cross country route going via Partridge Green, Lock’s Farm, Dial Post and The Countryman Inn (for coffee) and then continued towards Storrington and Washington before arriving for lunch at The Red Lion, Ashington.

Another 3 intrepid cyclists met us for lunch, one having cycled from Brighton to meet us, so we were 14 for a very welcome and delicious lunch.

We returned to Henfield via Spithandle Lane and West End Lane having braved the rather deep mud near the river!!

By the time we all went our separate ways at The Cat And Canary most of us had completed a 26 mile bike ride.

Our next trip is scheduled for April 6th to the Eight Bells at Bolney.
Keep cycling!!
