Cranleigh is usually a classic pre-marathon training run, mainly along rural lanes in very pleasant Surrey countryside. The course is undulating, but there are no long hills – the worst one being just before the finish.
Yesterday’s event was however something else! I have never raced in such cold conditions, apart possibly from the Steyning Stinger last year when it was also wet. The temperature hovered around freezing, but the wind chill made it feel a lot colder and my fingers were so numb – despite wearing gloves – that it was an achievement just to open a gel.
However Ilidia, Jackie, Natasha, Marcus, Terry and myself all got round in very respectable times. Gary did an amazing 2.37 – that guy has a sub-3 marathon in him. Well done to everyone, including the marshalls who must have been even colder than we were.
