SUMMARY:Hangover 5 Mile Fun Run
DESCRIPTION:This is the first run of the 2022 Fun Run League after a 2 year break due to Coronavirus\, and is a 5 mile trail race up hilly\, muddy and chalky tracks and paths up to Cissbury Ring and back. This is a steady but nice climb and will definitely clear any fuzzy heads\, but what a way to start 2022! NOTE: THIS IS OPEN TO HENFIELD JOGGERS MEMBERS ONLY \nHangover 5 Route DescriptionThe route follows the same course as previous years. It starts with an anti-clockwise lap around the sports field followed by a 100m road section which will be marshalled to stop traffic at the start of the race. After the short road section the route takes a left turn up a chalk track for about 300m. Up to this point there is plenty of space for passing runners\, but after the chalk track section the route gradually narrows to become essentially a single file track as it slowly climbs to the foot of what is known within the club as “cardiac hill”! \nThe first half of the hill is steep\, single file and on exposed chalk which can be very slippery when wet. About half way up the route takes a slight dog-left to the left\, (ignore path to the right)\, and continues the climb towards Cissbury Ring. At the top\, which will be marshalled by the finger post\, the route takes a left turn down a wide track. If it’s wet or icy\, the first 30m or so after the turn are on exposed chalk which can be extremely slippery so please be careful. \nThe track around the edge of Cissbury could be described as “undulating” with a short but steep climb up the West side of the ring followed at the top by a sharp left 90′ turn to a marshalled gate. This is approximately half way and all the hard work has been done as the route is now mostly downhill to the finish. \nDepending on the rainfall\, about 200m after leaving the gate\, there could be two “water hazards”\, (large and deep puddles)\, to negotiate through or around. The sides have become eroded and slippery and so good luck trying to stay dry! A marshal will be stationed here. Caution: Along the same section\, there will be an area of the track taped off protecting runners from barbed wire buried in the long grass. \nAfter the “puddles” there’s a long downhill section\, ignoring any turns left or right until reaching the next marshalled point where the route takes a sharp left turn onto a single file track which runs through a hedge line across the golf course. After a short climb there’s a sharp right turn\, (marshalled)\, to retrace the route back to the finish line. \nThe return 100m road section will be marshalled\, but not closed to traffic so please exercise extreme caution along the road before turning left heading back through the car park to the finish. \nNote: Water is available in the start and finish area\, but there are no water stations out on the course. \nClick here for OS map extracts with route marked.

DESCRIPTION:The event takes place on footpaths across open land on the Denne Park and Chesworth Farm estates\, close to Horsham town centre. A nice mixture of woodland and open fields\, with a great view over Horsham from the highest point. \nApproximately 4.5 miles\, undulating\, majority off-road course\, on bridleways and footpaths. One short section of the course is on a tarmacked driveway\, although you can run on the grass verge beside this if you prefer. Water station at finish line. Not suitable for U16s or wheelchair athletes. Disabled runners\, please contact Race Director at info@horshamjoggers.co.uk to discuss the course before entering. \nParking is in the public multi-storey carparks at Piries Place\, Copnall Way\, Horsham\, RH12 1BF and at Swan Walk\, 3-4 Medwin Walk\, Horsham RH12 1AG.  Allow 10 mins walk to race HQ and a further 10 mins walk to the start.  We rely on the goodwill of local residents so please do not attempt to park near Race HQ. \nThere’s a mini mile at 10:00am before the main event at the slightly earlier than normal time of 10:30am.

DESCRIPTION:Setting off from outside the Wave Leisure Centre\, it’s an undulating off road run and as the name suggests\, sort of er\, uphill\, along hilly chalky tracks and paths to the Steepdown trig point and back down. The name is worse than the route though – if you’ve done Highdown or Roundhill then this is much more gentle and accessible by all. \nIt’s also the day after Beachy Head Marathon – so you’ll be properly warmed up for it! \n1 mile junior run at 10:30am \n5 mile senior race at 11:00am.

DESCRIPTION:A lovely run through through the stunning woods at Tilgate. It’s gently undulating\, crossing the M23 but never straying too far from it\, yet you could be a million miles away! \nThis is pretty level with a few undulations in the forest track and it’s generally fast and straightforward! \nJunior mile at 10:30am. \nIn recent years\, parking has been a few minutes away from the K2\, so do allow plenty of time to get parked\, get registered and get to the start.

DESCRIPTION:This is a lovely 5 miler along country lanes and forest trails. There are one or two surprising inclines\, but it’s a firm favourite and well worth the trip. \nThere’s a 0.8 miler for mini-jiggers beforehand. \nMain Race 11:00am \n0.8 mile Junior Race: 10:15am \nThe Village Hall is the base\, report here for registration and for use of toilet and changing facilities. You may also leave kit at the Village Hall (at your own risk\, although we’ve never had a problem). After registration\, there is a 10 minute walk to the start in Limbourne Lane. \nAt the Village Hall\, showers are available\, but more importantly ample tea and the famous Fittleworth Flyers’ cakes (a little British queuing may be necessary).

DESCRIPTION:The Hornets ‘Stinger’ is a challenging 10km cross-country course with spectacular views of the Downs and featuring hills\, stiles and varied terrain. In addition\, this year\, there is a junior cross country race of 1 mile. It’s a belter. \nABOUT THE SENIOR COURSE\nThe race starts from the clubhouse / playing field. The route follows the same as previous years but we decided it would be better to cut the walk down the road to the start and make the course a rounded 10k.\nThe finish is on the rugby club pitches in front of the Rugby clubhouse. \nThe course is approximately 10 kilometres along public bridleways and footpaths. The ground consists of chalk with flint exposed and grass. It is very uneven especially in the first 2 kilometres where there are deep tractor ruts often containing water. On the return\, the field at 8K is badly pitted by cattle hooves on a moderate downhill gradient. Please proceed with extreme caution – you can make up time later. \nAt the beginning of the race\, there is a steep gradient and sharp right turn after which the climbs are less severe. There is\na second steep gradient after approx. 5 kilometres\, out of Saddlescombe Farm\, where water is available.\nIt is likely that the uneven terrain and stiles will produce reduced race times – but a great run! \nRegistration and race HQ at the Brighton Blues Rugby clubhouse

Otherwise you will NOT have a Free entry \nIt’s probably because of its proximity to Henfield\, or maybe the bbq and bar at the Cricket Club\, but definitely also for its incredible views and course\, which starts in the High Street opposite the clock tower and includes a stiff climb to the top of Round Hill above Steyning\, and a great descent to the cricket club! \nThis is a great race but it’s a testing climb through the woods – terrific finish though!

DESCRIPTION:It is an out and back course of about 5 miles along the sandy beach in Littlehampton\, starting on the green near the coastguard tower at 7:30pm and then heading east on the beach towards Worthing. The turning point is at a drinks station due south of Pigeon House Lane\, East Preston from where the runners will return back along the sand to Littlehampton\, finishing in the same part of the green near the coastguard tower.\n.\nThe juniors are not left out as there is a 0.75 mile race at 7:00pm for all ages up to 16\, also starting and finishing on the green near the coastguard tower. \nThis is another event that generally involves a refreshment visit to a local hostelry for food and drink on the way home for those who need it.

DESCRIPTION:Unusually – this one takes place on a Saturday\, so you can take advantage of the Downland School Fair! \nThis is a single lap\, flat\, multi-terrain course which is all off road and run on footpaths and fields as well as in Lag Wood and Butchers Wood. \nMostly flat\, with the occasional bump\, the race runs through fields and woodland and is probably just a bit short of the five miles. \nThere’s a junior race at 12:00noon and the main Fun Run is at 12:30pm. \nParking is available at the School; please follow the car park marshal instructions and arrive in plenty of time and share lifts whenever possible to reduce demand for parking. Overflow parking is available on the local streets. \nWater is provided at a water station about half way round the course and at the finish.

DESCRIPTION:The course is in Hove Park and run on mainly good quality\, slightly undulating\, asphalt paths\, and that’s pretty well it! \nIn a change from previous years\, the course will be 3 laps of the outer ring of the park\, starting near the basketball courts and running in a clockwise direction – about 5.7k (3.54 miles in old money.) \nThere’s an 800m race for the Under 9’s and a 1500m one for Under 15’s – something for everyone. \nFlattish with one sharp up and a really nice\, long and gentle downhill section – it’s fast\, well organised and great fun.

SUMMARY:Hedgehoppers 5 mile - Fun Run
DESCRIPTION:This is a 5 mile course on undulating paths over the South Downs starting and finishing 1/2 a mile from Portslade Sports Centre. \nChanging\, showers and toilets are available at the Sports Centre. First Aid in attendance. Spot prizes. \nPlease only park in the lower car park at Portslade Aldridge Community Academy and allow a 5 minute walk from there to the Sports Centre where the flag will be. Where possible please car share or use public transport.  \nNo parking available at the start / finish. \nIt’s then about a 10 minute walk/jog back up the road and over onto the Down for the start – be careful with traffic. So this is definitely one where it’s good to be on time. \nThere’s no mini-Joggers’ event for this one. The route is up toward Devils Dyke with a loop around the top – glorious views on a good day – and then around and down the same path back down – about 2 miles up approx before a level bit and a canter back down. It’s very definitely uphill and there’s a slightly cheeky uphill ‘bounce’ on the way down that that gets people every year!  \nGreat opportunity to have some fun with hills!

DESCRIPTION:Starting on the athletics track at Lewes Leisure Centre this multi-terrain 10k race heads out towards Kingston before looping back into Lewes\, briefly on paved roads before heading back into the stadium area to finish on the track in style! \nThis is a mostly trail 10k\, which is mainly traffic free using tracks and footpaths to the south of Lewes\, that can vary according to the weather so don’t expect any PB’s\, but its a great run with some lovely scenery and perfect whether you’re an old hand or it’s your first Fun Run! \n10.40 am 1 mile juniors’ run \n11.00 am 10K \nRefreshments\, changing and showers all available. SUMMARY:Great Walstead 5 - Fun Run
DESCRIPTION:This is a lovely run\, which was new to the Fun Run League last year. Take part entirely off road at Great Walstead School in Lindfield. It’s 8km – so slightly short of 5 miles in old money – with a junior 1.5km race at 10:00am. \nThe main race course is two laps of a scenic route through the extensive woodlands behind the school\, and is entirely on footpaths and tracks. It will be fully marshalled by members of the Harriers\, and a team of volunteers will be providing tea\, coffee and range of refreshments for runners and their supporters. \nIt’s a great addition to the calendar and a fabulous run.

SUMMARY:Trundle Hill 10k - Fun Run
DESCRIPTION:Probably the most distant race from Henfield\, on a late Spring/early Summer evening\, this is a most beautiful event. The course of approximately 10k heads north along Marsh Lane following public footpaths to take in a lap of the Iron-age hill fort before returning along the same route. It is\, there is no doubt\, uphill\, but not by as much as people think. The start is outside the Village Hall\, then along fairly flat trails for about a mile or so before turning right and starting the ascent of about 1 mile on mostly flint tracks to the top of Trundle Hill\, with magnificent views down onto Goodwood Racecourse and out across the Channel. Then its around the top of the summit and back down the same route\, this time at a canter. Trust me\, its an event worth turning up to! \nThere are strong uphill (and downhill!) elements to this one – but it really is worth it!

DESCRIPTION:A five mile\, multi-terrain course of scenic country lanes and woodland bridle paths\, undulating throughout and in deepest Sussex\, beautiful! \nHenfield Joggers only\, it’s £3 if you book with me or £5 if you turn up on the day…….you know pre-booking makes sense! \nIts a lovely run though narrow and slightly undulating so I grade this a Paulie level 2. \nFor a course map click here: \nArriving\nArriving in Fittleworth\, you will be directed to car parking\, principally at the back of the Village Hall and in the school car park and playground next door. If you do have to park on the roads around the venue\, please have consideration for other road users\, residents\, and pedestrians. \nThe Village Hall is the base\, report here for registration and for use of toilet and changing facilities. You may also leave kit at the Village Hall (at your own risk\, although we’ve never had a problem). Please note that dogs are not permitted on the recreation ground next to Fittleworth Village Hall. \nAfter registration\, there is a 10 minute walk to the start in Limbourne Lane. \nThe Start\nThis is in a narrow lane\, so patience and personal space are important! You’ll turn around to face and start running back the way you’ve just walked\, so it’s a good idea for not-so-fast people to walk past those ready to race. \nRefreshments\nAt the Village Hall\, showers are available\, but more importantly ample tea and the famous Fittleworth Flyers’ cakes (a little British queuing may be necessary).

SUMMARY:Roundhill Romp 6mile
DESCRIPTION:7.30pm start \nThere are a number of things to watch out for around the course: \nMouse Lane\, which you enter near the beginning of the race\, is very narrow with high banks on either side. It is prone to having surface water flowing down it from the hills even in dry weather. There are also a number of houses along the lane that occasionally generate traffic during the race. Please remember that vehicles have the right of way – not you! \nThe other tracks and paths of the course are either rutted\, muddy and pot holed dirt\, slippery chalky paths or flint tracks. The paths are very uneven and often have exposed tree roots going across them. Occasionally fallen trees will partially block the paths. Every effort will be made to cut these back or have them removed but this may not always be possible and runners may be required to climb over\, duck under or go around these obstacles. \nPlease also be prepared to stand aside if faster runners need to overtake on narrower parts of the course. \nThere are a number of gates and fences around the course that we arrange to be opened on the night but there are also a number of gates and posts that cannot be removed so please take care. \nThe course has some very steep up and down slopes that can be VERY SLIPPERY. There are gates\, tree roots\, pot holes and slippery paths on the slopes. Please take care and avoid going too fast on the downward slope towards the end of the race. \nCar Parks are available at Tanyard Lane and Fletchers Croft. Please do not try to park at the finishing field as parking is severely limited and will be needed for race officials and First Aid. \nFinally please – NO DOGS.

SUMMARY:Beach Run 5 mile - Fun Run
DESCRIPTION:This event is unique to the league as it is the only run on a beach. It’s an out and back course of about 5 miles along the sandy beach in Littlehampton\, starting on the green near the coastguard tower at 7:30pm and then heading east on the beach towards Worthing\, moving between the beach itself and the beachside path. The turning point is at a drinks station due south of Pigeon House Lane\, East Preston from where the runners will return back along the sand to Littlehampton\, finishing in the same part of the green near the coastguard tower. \nCertainly not hilly – though graded a Paulie 2 because running along a beach/shingle is always harder than road or a hard trail\, but on a summers eve\, what could be better?! \nGive Danielle your names before 4th June and its just £3 – simply splendid!

SUMMARY:Hornet Stinger - Fun Run 9.5k
DESCRIPTION:Hove Hornets welcome you to their first race as members of the WSFRL. This is a new race\, a challenging cross-country course over 9.5km of the Downs with spectacular views\, which includes hills\, stiles and varied terrain. The race start is one mile from the clubhouse on the eastern arm of Waterhall Road so leave yourself 15/20 minutes to walk/jog from the clubhouse across the grass to just beyond the underpass. The finish is on the rugby club pitches in front of the Rugby clubhouse. The course is approximately 9.5 kilometres along public bridleways and footpaths. The ground consists of chalk with flint exposed and grass. It is very uneven especially in the first 2 kilometres where there are deep tractor ruts often containing water. On the return the field at 8K is badly pitted by cattle hooves on a moderate downhill gradient. Please proceed with extreme caution – you can make up time later! At the beginning of the race\, there is a steep gradient and sharp right turn after which the climbs are less severe. There is a second steep gradient after approx. 5 kilometres\, out of Saddlescombe Farm\, where water is available. It is likely that the uneven terrain and stiles will produce reduced race times – but a great run! The course will be marked by kilometre signs (approx.distances only) and direction arrows \nLOCATION \nThe race is at Waterhall Playing Fields\, Waterhall Road\, Brighton\, BN1 8YR (Registration at Brighton Blues Rugby clubhouse) \nFACILITIES \nThe race HQ is located in the clubhouse of the Brighton Blues Rugby Club. Refreshments provided by the Rugby club will be on sale at the clubhouse before and after the race. The clubhouse also provides a great place to have a drink/food/chat after the race. Please take advantage of it. Without the Rugby club’s assistance this race would not be possible and we ask that you respect their premises and staff. Collection of race numbers\, on the day entries and enquiries about the race will take place in the clubhouse. Changing rooms and showers are located on the lower ground floor. Toilets are located inside the clubhouse as per direction signs. A free bag storage service will be available but\, as usual\, used at your own risk The car park is to the right as you arrive at the clubhouse. There is room for about 130 vehicles. We are measuring to get the distance precise.

SUMMARY:Valentines 3.5 Mile - Fun Run
DESCRIPTION:The Valentine’s Run is a multi-terrain race of approximately 3.5 miles\, becoming famous for its post-race home-made cakes.  Organised by the Horsham Joggers\, it is part of the West Sussex Fun Run League. Start is at 10am and Race HQ is the Southwater Scout & Guide Jubilee HQ (note that this is new this year – and its a 10 minute walk to the start so allow plenty of time!) Under the 2014 ‘Paulie’ scale I grade this as a 2 – its mostly flat but the almost inevitable presence of what is usually pretty thick MUD makes this slightly tougher than normal – dress for the conditions and watch the weather. But its FUN! As usual\, for Henfield Joggers only\, book in advance through me before 30th January and I’ll sort your number out all for £2!\n \nUpdate: Tuesday 28th January\nThe race team walked the course yesterday\, and it’s looking OK at the moment – about the same as last year\, if not a bit better.  So we’re expecting to go ahead on Sunday as planned.  Obviously\, things could still change and I will of course let you know in that unlikely event (at least snow isn’t in the offing like 2012!) – the final course walk is on Saturday. \nFor old hands\, please note that the location of Race HQ has changed this year – it’s in the same road (Church Road)\, but a different hut (Scouts and Guides\, rather than the Church Hall).

DESCRIPTION:Under Pauls 2014 ‘Grading’ scheme this is Grade 1 – Totally Flat! In fact it doesn’t come much flatter than this! Usually a glorious day and for many the very first race of the year – for others a really good ‘first race’. \nCourse\nThe course is a flat out and back 4 miles heading West along Worthing promenade. A small portion of the course is run on grass. \nParking\nOn street parking is very limited close to the start the area\, we recommend using the towns multi-story car parks (the easiest is directly across the road above the bowling alley and M&S)\, or the roads approx 800m to the West of the start location. \nBag Storage\nAdjacent to the race office is temporary storage for participants belongings during the race. Please note that space is limited and we cannot accept any responsibility for items left. \nRefreshments\nAvailable in the Lido adjacent to the Start/Finish. \nStart Location\nWorthing promenade\, outside the Lido. \nAs always\, for Henfield Joggers only\, book through me in advance an I’ll sort your number out for you and all for a mere £2 – let me know by 23rd January please.
